One of the biggest misconceptions about SEO in Zimbabwe is that you need expensive software and specialist knowledge to improve your Google ranking. The reality is that Google itself provides several powerful free tools that give you everything you need to understand where your website stands and what to fix. Here are the five most important ones — and how to use each one.
1. Google Search Console
This is the single most important free SEO tool available — and it comes directly from Google. Google Search Console shows you exactly how Google sees your website: which pages are indexed, which keywords you are already ranking for (and at what position), any technical errors Google has found, and how many people are clicking through to your site from search results.
Setting it up takes about 15 minutes and requires verifying that you own your website. Once live, give it 4–8 weeks to accumulate data and then you will have a clear picture of your starting point. Go to search.google.com/search-console to get started.
2. Google Business Profile (Insights)
If you have set up your Google Business Profile (and you absolutely should — read our guide: How to Set Up Google Business Profile in Zimbabwe), the Insights section within the dashboard shows you how many people are finding your business on Google Maps, what searches they used to find you, and what actions they took (phone calls, direction requests, website visits). This data is gold for understanding what is working locally.
3. Google PageSpeed Insights
Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your website URL. Google will analyse your site's loading speed and give you a score out of 100 for both mobile and desktop. More importantly, it will list the specific issues slowing your site down — in order of impact. Share this report with your web designer and ask them to fix the items listed as "Opportunities." Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor, and fixing it can make a noticeable difference to your rankings within weeks.
4. Google Keyword Planner
Google Keyword Planner (accessible through a free Google Ads account — you do not need to run ads to use it) shows you how many people search for specific keywords each month and how competitive those keywords are. This is how you discover which phrases your potential customers in Zimbabwe are actually typing into Google. Use it to identify keywords you should be targeting on your website pages and in your blog content.
5. Google Analytics 4
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows you detailed data about everyone who visits your website: how they found you (Google search, social media, direct), which pages they visit, how long they stay, and whether they complete actions like filling in a contact form. Setting it up requires adding a small piece of tracking code to your website — your web designer can do this in minutes. Once live, it gives you the clearest possible picture of whether your website is actually working.
Where to start: If you only do one thing today, set up Google Search Console. It is free, takes 15 minutes, and gives you more useful SEO data about your website than any paid tool.
Beyond the Free Tools
Once you have these five set up and you have a clear baseline picture of your website's performance, you will have enough information to make meaningful decisions about where to invest your time and budget. You may find that your main issues are technical (fixable by your developer), content-related (a blogging strategy will help), or local (Google Business Profile optimisation is the priority).
