You have a website. You paid someone to build it. But when you search for your own business on Google — or worse, when a potential customer searches for what you offer in Harare — your site is nowhere to be found. This is one of the most common and most frustrating problems for Zimbabwe business owners. The good news is that every single cause is fixable. Here is exactly why it is happening and what to do about it.
Reason 1: Your Website Is Too New
Google does not index websites instantly. After a new site is launched, it can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks before Google even crawls it, and ranking for competitive keywords can take months. If your site launched in the last 30–60 days and it is not showing up yet, this may simply be a patience issue rather than a problem. That said, there are steps you can take to speed the process up — starting with submitting your site to Google Search Console.
Reason 2: Your Site Was Never Submitted to Google
Google finds websites by crawling the web — but that process is not guaranteed or instant. The fastest way to tell Google your site exists is to set up Google Search Console (it is free), add your website, and submit your sitemap. A sitemap is a file that lists all the pages on your site so Google can find them. If your web designer did not do this when they built your site, it needs to happen today.
Check this now: Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with your Google account. Add your property and follow the verification steps. Then submit your sitemap — typically found at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
Reason 3: Your Website Has No On-Page SEO
Google reads your website like a document. It looks at your page titles, headings, content, and image descriptions to understand what your business does and where you are located. If your website simply says "Welcome to our website" with no mention of Harare, Zimbabwe, or what you actually sell — Google has no idea how to categorise you.
Every page on your website needs a unique title tag that includes your main keyword and location. For example, a plumber in Harare should have a title like: Plumber in Harare — Emergency Plumbing Services Zimbabwe | [Business Name]. Your homepage content should also mention your city and service clearly in the first paragraph.
Reason 4: No Google Business Profile
If someone searches "web designer near me" or "electrician Harare" — the results that appear first are not regular website results. They are Google Business Profile listings — the map-based results that show your location, reviews, and contact details. If you have not set up a Google Business Profile, you are completely invisible in these results, which are often the first thing potential customers click.
Setting up a Google Business Profile is free and typically takes about an hour. Read our full guide: How to Set Up Google Business Profile in Zimbabwe.
Reason 5: Your Website Has No Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours. Google treats them like votes of confidence — the more credible sites that link to you, the more trustworthy Google considers your site. A brand-new website with zero backlinks will always struggle to rank against established competitors. Start by getting listed in local directories, asking partners or suppliers to link to your site, and publishing content that other people want to reference.
Reason 6: Your Website Loads Too Slowly
Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. A website that takes more than 3–4 seconds to load on a mobile phone will rank lower than a faster competitor — even if the content is better. In Zimbabwe, where many users are on mobile data connections, this matters even more. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (free tool) and fix any issues flagged as critical.
Reason 7: You Are Targeting the Wrong Keywords
Your website might be perfectly optimised — but for keywords that nobody in Zimbabwe is actually searching. If you are a restaurant in Harare optimising for "fine dining experiences" instead of "restaurant Harare" or "where to eat in Harare," you are going after the wrong terms. Use Google's free Keyword Planner or simply look at what Google suggests when you start typing your service into the search bar. Those suggestions are real searches real people are making.
Where to Start
If your business is not showing up on Google, start with these three things this week: set up Google Search Console, create or claim your Google Business Profile, and make sure your homepage title tag includes your main service and location. These three steps alone will make a significant difference within 60 days.
